RESEARCH TEAM

  • Paul Adam Gonzales, BS, MD

    Paul received his B.S. in Biology from the University of San Francisco and M.D. from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay in the Philippines. His research focuses on investigating workplace factors that impact surgeon well-being, with the aim of informing system-level interventions to improve surgical training and create a sustainable work environment for surgeons.

  • Anna Sophia Bresler, BA, MD

    Anna holds a B.A. from St. John's College, NM, in Philosophy and History of Mathematics and Science and an M.D. from the University of Queensland, Australia. She is passionate about mindfulness as a pathway for personal and professional growth. Her research focuses on motivational drivers in general surgery residents, their application in surgical training, and the impact of mindfulness-based interventions on resident performance and career longevity. She also develops strategies for implementing well-being initiatives in community hospitals.

  • Feyisayo Ojute, BS

    Feyisayo received her B.S. from UCLA. As a medical student she is conducting qualitative research on the factors that influence expectations, experience and wellbeing in surgery residents, with an emphasis on race and gender. She will also participate in a project focusing on the use of mindfulness-based interventions to address health disparities in breast cancer.

  • Jenny Cevallos, BS

    Jenny Cevallos received her B.S. in Biology from UCI. While at UCI she studied the long-term effects of adolescent cannabinoid exposure on reward seeking behavior and endocannabinoid systems. As a medical student at UCSF, she invested herself in high value care and health systems improvement. She is conducting research to support assessment of system-level interventions to improve resident well-being.

  • Elaine Nguyen, BS

    Elaine is a current medical student at the University of California, San Francisco. Her specialty interests include: General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Through UCSF, she aims to increase the medical field's focus on the importance of physician well-being, social determinants of health, and access to medical education.

  • Michael Berler

    Michael was born and raised in San Francisco and will graduate in June 2023 from Carleton College (Northfield, MN) with a major in Chemistry and additional coursework in Biochemistry and Mathematics. He is a Certified Nurse Assistant and EMT, working for the past year at Northfield Hospital and Clinics. Michael has worked with the Lebares Lab since 202. His research interests are in nervous system control and non-invasive/non-pharmacologic methods of enhancing attention and wellbeing. In his spare time, he works as coach at the local crossfit gym with certifications in CrossFit and nutrition and meditates regularly.

  • Nicole Puente, BS

    Nicole received her B.S. in Biology from the University of San Francisco and currently works full time in a lab at a biotech company that specializes in cancer detection. She enjoys trying new things, especially food, and is obsessed with anything mushroom-themed.

  • Brianna Johnston

    Brianna is a 4th year undergraduate student at UC Berkeley studying Integrative Biology. She was selected for the College Corps Fellowship, which allows her to work in underserved high schools. Her research interests include mindfulness as a means to address and improve mental health and health disparities.

  • Simryn Covarrubias, BS

    Simryn Covarrubias graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2022 with a B.S. in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Neuroscience. She is currently working alongside Dr. Lebares on a project which focuses on providing Enhanced Stress Resilience Training (ESRT) to African American women who are Breast Cancer survivors. This project aims to address the overwhelming health disparities in this community.

  • George Wen, BS

    George graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.S in Molecular and Cell Biology, and a minor in Psychology in 2022. He has worked in mental health advocacy for several years, including educating undergraduate students in mindfulness and stress-reduction strategies. George is also passionate about research and hopes to expand the evidence base for mindfulness based practices for medical staff by working in the Lebares Lab. When away from his work, George loves to be at the top of shady green hikes and has recently taken an interest in Muay Thai.

  • Yash Shroff, BA

    Yash is a first year medical student at the BU Chobanian and Alvedesian School of Medicine - class of 2027. He is interested in pursuing a career in surgery and is passionate about the mental well-being and education of residents and physicians. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, working out, and photography.

  • Steven Molina, BS

    Steven was born and raised in Los Angeles. He received his B.S. in Biology at the University of California, Riverside in 2020. During his undergraduate tenure he grew interest in cognition, mental fitness and wellbeing while studying under Dr. Aaron Seitz in the UC Riverside Brain Game Center. His specialty interest includes acute care surgery and transplantation. During his free time, he enjoys surfing and weight training.

  • Ankita Biyani

    Ankita is a rising sophomore at the University of California, Berkeley, studying Cognitive Science and Data Science. Along with an interest in the intersection of AI and Health, she is passionate about raising awareness for mental health and mindfulness in the medical community. Currently, she is assisting with several research projects on the importance of self-care and factors impacting surgeon well-being. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies and spending time with family & friends.

  • Tiffany Rodriguez, BA

    Tiffany graduated with a B.A. in Anthropology from New York University in 2021. Through her undergraduate experiences, she developed an interest in medicine and is currently volunteering at the Center for Mindfulness in Surgery at UCSF to further explore this interest. In her free time, she enjoys journaling and playing the violin.
