We are proud to feature Dr. Umakant Dave, a distinguished gastroenterologist and an esteemed collaborator at the forefront of integrating mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques (ESRT) within medical education. Dr. Dave's efforts have not gone unnoticed. Recently, he was honored with a royal commendation for his contributions to the field — a symbol of excellence and dedication embodied by the shiny lapel cross he proudly dons.

Dr. Dave's commitment to mindfulness has made a profound impact. His collaboration with our group on a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) investigating the effects of ESRT in UK medical students speaks volumes of his dedication to advancing wellness interventions within the medical community. Dr. Dave’s latest pioneering work involves the application of ESRT to help rehabilitate incarcerated individuals, a testament to his belief in the transformative power of mindfulness across diverse populations.

The University of Minnesota's Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing, founded in 1995, collaborates with interdisciplinary centers, administrative, and collegiate units across all University of Minnesota campuses to provide exemplary interprofessional education, conduct rigorous research, deliver innovative engagement programs, and advance integrative models of care.
The Norwegian Institute for Studies of the Medical Profession – LEFO – investigates the job characteristics that influence physician job satisfaction, health, and the quality of medical work, while considering all aspects of the modern physician role. LEFO is partnered with UCSF Department of Surgery and the Center for Mindfulness in Surgery in a joint effort to explore the role of systems, institutional culture and individual physician fulfillment in affecting healthcare and directing healthcare reform.
The Mind & Life Institute aims to reduce suffering and encourage well-being by merging scientific research with contemplative practice and wisdom traditions. We attended the Mind & Life Summer Research Institute in 2017 and 2018, as well as their 2018 International Research Institute in Kyoto, Japan, which focused on the theme "Contemplative Practice in Context: Culture, History, and Science."
Dr. Lebares is an affiliated faculty member at UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine which is dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare by combining traditional and alternative medical approaches from around the world, fostering outstanding integrative health professionals through comprehensive education and training, and propelling the field of integrative health forward through collaboration and in-depth research.
In 2018, Dr. Lebares was a scientific presenter at the Tritiya Dharmachakra Foundation’s annual conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
