The research conducted by the Lebares Resilience Lab focuses on how cognitive and emotional factors affect performance and the advantages of mindfulness-based interventions. It also studies the connections between well-being, burnout, and patient safety.

Some key areas of research at the Lebares Resilience Lab include:

  • Psychological well-being and burnout: The lab studies how cognitive and emotional factors, such as stress, anxiety, and burnout, influence the performance of healthcare professionals, particularly surgeons.

  • Mindfulness and resilience: The lab explores the effects of mindfulness-based interventions, such as Enhanced Stress Resilience Training (ESRT), on improving resilience and reducing stress in healthcare professionals.

  • Neurocognitive performance: Dr. Lebares and her team examine the neural mechanisms that underlie performance in surgery and the impact of stress on neurocognitive functioning.

  • Operationalization and Implementation: The lab investigates the prevalence and impact of burnout and psychological distress among healthcare professionals and examines potential interventions to improve well-being and reduce burnout.

  • Patient safety and quality improvement: The Lebares Resilience Lab also focuses on the link between healthcare professionals' well-being and patient safety, aiming to identify interventions that improve both staff well-being and patient outcomes.

Building Resilience, Bridging Disparities: Tailoring Mindfulness-Based Interventions for African American Breast Cancer Survivors

Simryn Covarrubias, BS, is passionate about addressing health disparities. Here’s what she has to say about how ESRT can help: "Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI’s) have the potential to act as both a well-being intervention and a synergistic adjunct to standard oncologic care in Black women with breast cancer. The MBI used in our study is an adaptable approach known as Enhanced Stress Resilience Training (ESRT) and will be effectively tailored for African American women breast cancer survivors. Our study focuses on addressing a major and long-standing health outcome disparity in Black women. Ultimately, we would like to develop a feasible and tailored MBI that would both markedly improve the lives of Black women breast cancer survivors, and represent a long overdue move toward health equity and parity for this population."
